Power Rangers movie toys revealed, and they’re not awful

With the new film set to release early next year, details on the accompanying toys have been popping up over the last few months. A lucky few have managed to get their hands on copies of the new movie Morpher (please note that this is not the Legacy version of the original Morpher) and one of the new Interactive Megazord figures. The Interactive Megazord is our first proper look at the cinematic version of the classic combining robot, and we’re seeing it before any proper images of it from the actual film. Opinions are decisively split on whether the design is abominable or pleasantly surprising. A major complaint is that it doesn’t really look like a classic interpretation of what we’d consider a robot, and instead looks far more alien. I personally feel that the production team opting to go for an alien and almost a slightly organic design (think the EVA Units) fits well with the themes present in the reboot. It’s not as if this actually effects the design of the original Megazord either, this film is set in a separate canon. Whilst teaser images gave us a general idea of what the toys would be like, actually seeing video of them in action shines a fairly positive light on them. The Morpher is actually really nice, but I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the big plastic handle sticking out of the top. If you’re a fan of Kamen Rider, you’ll understand what I say when I say that it looks like a mix between Agito’s belt and the Ghost Driver, with the Power Coins bearing a close resemblance to OOO Medals. For everyone else though, it’s a twisted grey design with a hexagonal lens in the middle that shows your Power Coin of choice. There’s a board of LEDs placed at the back of the lens that spin around and light up in different fashions to create different effects, all with accompanying sounds. This is actually something I feel I’m going to have to acquire for my own collection, presuming the film isn’t terrible of course. I usually don’t care for ‘interactive’ figures, but I really think they’ve done a fantastic job with this one. For starters, it’s a behemoth, probably about twice the size of even the Legacy Megazord. There’s not a lot of paint, with a little smattering of red, yellow pink and a very nice metallic blue here and there. We’ve got a general idea of how the individual Zords will combine, but no specifics as of yet. Blue seems to form the legs, yellow the torso, red the arm and pink the head and wings. Black is still an unknown entity though. There are accompanying sounds for the electronic play features, but not for the standard, manual ones. The face and chest light up, and the feet do too when the toy is lifted off of a surface. There are voice lines from (presumably) one of the Rangers too. It’s got an extendable combat blade on the right fist and moving blasters on the left, with expanding and folding wings on the back controlled by a little switch. Perhaps the most exciting feature is the inclusion of miniature figures of each of the Rangers. Various cockpits located around the Megazord (one on each bicep, each thigh and in the abdomen) open up and allow the figures to sit inside. They didn’t have to include this, but it can add a lot of play value to a toy, and give collectors extra display options too. I don’t have solid dates for the rest of the toys, but the Interactive Megazord is expected to release on the 2nd of December this year, presumably in the US, with other regions getting the toys later (this isn’t confirmed though). Keep an eye out for toy releases and details of the other toys and merchandise in the line, as I’d expect a lot to surface within the next few weeks.
