Nintendo finally unveiled the NX as the Switch, ahead of its March 2017 release. As previously assumed, the console is both a home system and a portable device. The main body of the console is a tablet, plugging in to a docking station for use on a television. The tablet can also be removed and used as a hand-held console. On either side of the tablet are controllers, which can stay attached to function as what is effectively a next-gen Wii U Gamepad, or can detach for both single and multiplayer fun. A handy stand pops out of the back to keep the tablet upright. The two controllers also seem to be able to attach to a smaller middle piece to create a differently shaped square controller. Another type of controller, far closer to an XBOX controller will be available also. In the trailer we saw games being inserted in cartridge form, in the top of the tablet. Wireless play is available between Switches whilst out and about as well as in the comfort of your home. Aside from Breath of the Wild, both Mario and Mario Kart were demonstrated along with a Basketball title and Splatoon. The remastered version of Skyrim also seems to be making way to the Switch, and the idea of playing Skyrim on a plane or long journey is a very exciting one. We can only assume more information will be made available soon with the system expected to release early March. Not that Nintendo’s recent consoles were boring, but this is certainly the most exciting thing they’ve done in a while. Will it change the industry? That remains to be seen. Will it provide hours of fun and some fantastic titles? I’m sure of it.
